Today the Dutch Queen Beatrix opened the Floriade 2012 in Venlo, the biggest garden and horticulture exhibition in the world that takes place every ten years in the Netherlands.
The Belgian pavilion on the Floriade is designed by BUUR and Goedefroo+Goedefroo and forms a spatial symbiosis of a pavilion and a garden. Two vegetated platforms form the roof, but also the scenery for a promenade over and under the pavilion, through a dynamic world of plants and flowers.
The Floriade is opened until the 7th of October 2012.

Happy and proud BUUR announces you the arrival of two new team members: Ivo and Edoardo! They’ll both work as urban designers.
After previous successful cooperations for the BMT site and the renewal of the town centre BUUR now signed a framework contract with the municipality of Boechout. The next two years we will guide the town in their spatial policy.
The Brussels Institute for Environmental Protection choose BUUR as winner of the closed competition for the refurbishment of the central part of the Koning Boudewijnpark in Jette! The identity of this park is mainly defined by the valley of the river Molenbeek. In the central part of the park the interface and connection with the adjacent neighborhood is very big, which makes the space very intensively used. Therefore the park is both a dynamic space and an area with a lot of natural quality. In the design we focused mainly on the central entrance of the park, the refurbishment of the playgrounds, the reestablishment of the contact with the water of the Molenbeek and the strengthening and legibility of the path network. For this assignment BUUR collaborates with ARA for the construction and DEES&LEPAGE who will support the project with temporary interventions and installations.
BUUR is selected to make a masterplan for the centre of Maldegem. In the spatial study we will develop a framework for the further development of the village core and the planned refurbishment of the market square.
For the second year in a row BUUR will be represented on the Intarnational Model Project Forum at the Bauhaus University in Weimar (D), on the 9th and 10th of February. During this forum students of the Institute for European Urban Studies and international project partners will present and discuss contemporary urban projects and research topics. Julia Müller, student of the Bauhaus Uni who did an internship at BUUR last year, will present our project for the renewal of the centre of Boechout on the 9th of February, the day after Johan Van Reeth will give a lecture on recent project of BUUR. Everyone is welcome!
Also in 2011 BUUR was enriched with many new faces and talents. Jo, Diego, Maritza, Dagnu, Laura, Berno, Bart and Kevin aren’t just eight new talented team members, but they also represent five new nationalities for the office!
The masterplan for the Schattingbeek neighborhood in Zedelgem is in the last phase before realization. BUUR was selected for this project after an ‘Open Oproep’ competition in 2006, today the final plan was presented in front of the municipality. The project aims at strengthening the identity and attraction of the mainly social housing neighborhood by developing a new structure for the public space. By clarifying the hierarchy of the road network and introducing pocket spaces as meeting points we want to give Schattingbeek a more varied look and improve the community life and engagement among the inhabitants.

During a radio series on controversial building projects on the Flemish Radio 1, the developments around the station of Sint-Pieters in Ghent were covered today. Especially the new high-rise buildings of this project are contested by the surrounding inhabitants. By doing so, we attempt to bring the developer and the inhabitants more together.

BUUR won the fourth price in the urban design competition Freiham Nord in Munich!
As one of the thirteen offices that were selected for this competition, BUUR developed a masterplan for the first development phase of a new city quarter at the western border of the city of Munich. For the area of 45 ha an ambitious neighborhood was designed with 2500 new housing units, shops, schools and a cultural-religious centre. In their report the jury praised the intelligent spatial analysis, the qualitative connection towards the existing neighborhoods, the well-structured traffic system and the attention for a phased development of the area.
The competition was won by the Dutch office West 8.
The masterplan that BUUR and Aries are going to design for the canal banks at the Quay Biestebroek in Brussels already got news coverage. It is a project on a crucial location that recently became available for development and that will redraw the image of the municipality of Anderlecht and the quarter of Kuregem, so the big interest is understandable.
Together with the architecture office Goedefroo+Goedefroo BUUR has won the Open Oproep competition for a new administrative centre in Olsene (Zulte). BUUR also was responsible for the design of the enclosed inner court of the administrative centre.
BUUR and Aries Consultants have been appointed by the municipality of Anderlecht to create a masterplan for the canal banks near the Quay Biestebroek. BUUR has been appointed by the Brussels Capital Region to develop a high-rise vision for the city. Because of the continuous demographic growth high-rise building should be investigated as one of the possible ways to densify the urban structure. High-rise can also help strengthening the spatial structure of the city. To make sure that both the question for densification and the spatial conditions are answered, a framework for the quality of high-rise in Brussels will be developed.
BUUR, the German office Latz+Partner and De Sola & Gori Partners from Barcelona are selected for the competition for the design concept and visual quality strategy for the Green Singel in Antwerp. This ring road has been a barrier for the urban development of the city for a long time, our challenge will be to transform this area into a new central linking space that is defining for the identity of Antwerp. A Green Singel therefore doesn’t mean a monotonous combination of traffic and rest green, but a multi-colored pallet of functions in a high-quality urban space.
BUUR and his team Latz+Partner from Germany, Arcadis France and the French office Inddigo have been selected for the urban competition Pirmil Saint-Jacques et les Isles de Reze in Nantes (FR). In 2003, BUUR-partner Jens Aerts was assigned by Axel and Dick Vervoordt to develop a masterplan for an old industrial site along the Albert Canal in Wijnegem. He was also responsible for the architectural supervision.
Originally the site contained a jenever distiller, but in 2000 some of the buildings on the site were converted to depots, ateliers and exhibition halls for the antique business Axel Vervoordt. In the masterplan this program will be completed by ca. 100 living units, neighborhood shops, a restaurant and offices oriented towards the creative industry. To assure the masterplan would get a high quality translation on the architectural level, three architects and a landscape architect for the public space were assigned: Stéphane Beel, Coussée en Goris, Bogdan & Van Broeck Architects and Michel Desvigne. In the meantime the building permits have been delivered and the selling has started. Start of the construction works is foreseen for this year.
